Convincing the boss week 1

I’ve been talking with my boss a little about trying to do some things to promote the store. I’ve started with little things like having business cards on the counter for customers to have access to. I have reminded him a few times about the business cards but he tells me that he already has some and just keeps forgetting to bring them from his office. It has been a few months now and still no business cards. The boss is a great guy who I love working for, its just he doesn’t like to spend money on things. And I wish I knew of a better way to convince him that spending money on little things can have a large return for the store. His store has been in his family for like 30 years. And I see it as a secret in Edmond. People come into the store all the time talking about how they have not heard of our store before. Or talk about how much lower our prices are compared to anywhere else in town. So I guess I'm asking for ways to convince him to let me help get the secret out.

  1. It is very interesting to look at the different types of business operators and mangers throughout the country. One major characteristic that varies from one manager to the other is how they respond to risk. Your boss seems to be risk averse. He would rather not risk the money to pay for business cards because he is unaware of how effective the outcome will be. While I am sure there have been many successful risk averse business owners, I cannot help but notice that the most successful businesses and business people in the world are people who embrace and capitalize of risky decisions. At the end of the day, bigger risk can lead to bigger rewards. One option that your boss may be open to is creating a facebook page. If the employees agreed to update it, then it could be something that could be created for little to no cost to the company. It may or may not affect the amount of business that comes in, but it may be worth the time risk to see if it makes an impact.

Do you think social media would be a profitable option given the time risk it presents?

P.S. Where is this secret store at anyway?!

  2. I was going to suggest social media as well! He could keep up with it during slow times or after work, that would be a great way to advertise! Especially to people our age. Did you know that college students together spend about 5 billion dollars per year on alcohol? I would say that's worth 10 minutes a day on Facebook.
